From Appendix G of Stop Replaying Work at 3 A.M., by Maren Cole

After an awkward meeting

“Neutral reactions are not proof. I will not mind-read a silence.”

After tough feedback

“Feedback on my work is not a verdict on my worth. I can improve something without something being wrong with me.”

After an unclear message

“I don't have enough data to interpret this. I'll ask for clarity, or I'll wait for more information — not fill the gap with fear.”

After silence from your manager

“Silence usually means ‘no news,’ not ‘bad news.’ I'll act if something actually requires it.”

Before sleep

“I've captured what I can tonight. Tomorrow-me will handle the rest.”

At 3 a.m.

“I am noticing a loop. I am not required to solve it right now.”

Before a high-stakes event

“This week is genuinely higher-stakes. That's not catastrophizing — it's true. I prepare, then I stop.”

Right after you think you “bombed it”

“Something happened. I don't yet know what it means. I'll gather real information before I decide how bad this was.”
